THE COOK from The Dread Pirate Henry collection, Toads Tales, Toad Hollow Yarns
This is from our 2nd Toads’ Tales - The Dread Pirate Henry collection. Toads’ Tales are stories from The Hollow, a whimsical woodland home to the creatures that live in our imaginations. Every now and then they poke their heads out and tell us a story or two, which we then share with you.
This skein is for The Cook(see below for full story). We took inspiration from the illustration by Omar Rayan as found on Pinterest. There are four other yarns plus a mini skein set in this collection which can be found here:
THE DREAD PIRATE HENRY
Growing up in The Hollow, in the middle of the woods, a young fox like Henry has never seen a large body of water, let alone the ocean. That doesn’t stop him from wanting to be a pirate. Whenever anyone asks him what he wants to be when he grows up, he always answers “A Pirate” (with a capital P.) At night, he dreams about adventures on the high seas and the only books he willingly takes out of the library are all about pirates.
His favorites books are about Captain Cur and his ship The Mange. Captain Cur and his crew sail the Caribbean Seas robbing from the rich and sharing with the poor. “Just like Robin Hood, but on a boat” Henry explains to anyone who will listen.
The Mange has a crew of dastardly men. Other than the Captain, there is Roddy Rat, the Bos’n, who can handle the ship through all kinds of weather. Henry often pretends to be Roddy as he races around shouting “Hard to Port” and “Avast ye Landlubbers!”
Henry always laughs when he reads about Pete the cook, who is very roly-poly because he tastes everything he makes. Whenever Henry’s mother wants him to try something new for dinner, Henry asks if Pete had helped her. She has learned to say yes because then Henry eats it without complaint.
But Henry’s most favorite crew member is the first mate, Mr. Renard, who runs the ship and is in charge of the loot. He decides what to steal from every boat they board and makes sure each pirate gets their fair share.
Henry loves it when Mr Renard goes to bury the treasure and often imagines what it would be like to pilot the tiny boat, loaded down with gold and jewels, through the rocky shoals to the perfect deserted island. “No one” he thinks as he buries his sister’s favorite hair ribbon, “will ever find these riches!”
